Dune Awakening Announced at Gamescom 2022
From the trailer, we got little to nothing about the game. We get to see a character staring down into a barren desert. Then a giant sand worm rises up from the sand, and the character scales down to face off against the terrifying sand creature. Even though the actual dunegames.com website is rather arid in terms of info—comically apt for a Dune property—a press release issued by developer Funcom gives us a bit more insight. However, I must add that the site is in of itself a beautifully-crafted piece of web that’s definitely worth checking out, even if you don’t care about Dune. The game will present the player with a large-scale open world map and features multiplayer, obviously. You can face off against sand worms, build shelters and traverse in the iconic vehicles from Dune. It hopes to combine the valiance and life-or-death creativity of survival games with the social aspects of a large-scale, always online multiplayer game to derive a truly unique gaming experience. You can hunt for spice blooms and deploy a harvester which you’ll have to protect from rival factions and players. The combat has been claimed to be fast-paced and deadly. Dune Awakening isn’t the only Dune game that’s come out of the blockbuster Dune adaptation. Back in April of this year, Dune: Spice Wars was released with a real-time strategy take on the franchise, however, it wasn’t much of a hit. Regardless, information about the upcoming game is limited, to say the least, so we can’t make any guesses as to how it will turn out. Will the MMO stand out from the competition? Fans will have to wait till at least a gameplay trailer to find out.
